Marietta L. (Baumgarth) de Leon

Marietta de Leon, age 82, of Hayward, WI passed away on Monday, November 18, 2019 at her home.

Marietta Lee Baumgarth was born May 16, 1937 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Orrin and Mildred (Lindstrom) Baumgarth.  She was raised in Lincoln Park, IL and in 1955 graduated from Wayland Academy high school in Beaver Dam, WI.  Marietta met Justo “Rony” de Leon while attending school.  During summer vacations she would travel with her family to Hayward, WI where the family had a summer home on Round Lake.  Marietta enjoyed fishing, log rolling and archery hunting.  After her high school graduation, Marietta continued her education at Northwestern University where she studied to become a nurse.  On October 25, 1958 Marietta was joined in marriage to Justo “Rony” de Leon in Guatemala City, Guatemala.  Marietta and Rony lived in Guatemala most of the next 50 years except for 7 years when they moved to Puerto Rico and to Florida.  Marietta was a very busy home maker who enjoyed caring for her children and was always welcoming when her children’s friends would come by.   Marietta enjoyed baking, reading novels, playing cards, creating macramé, writing short stories, learning historical facts and figures, and playing a good game of Yahtzee.  In 2009, Marietta and Rony moved to Hayward, WI to assist Marietta’s mother with her health issues.  Marietta loved her family dearly and taught them how important it is to stay connected.  Marietta and Rony recently celebrated their 61st anniversary with their children.

Marietta is survived by her husband Rony; eight children, Patricia (Luis Torrez) Espat, Marietta (Herbert) Sundfeld, Rony “Ricky” (Lucrecia) de Leon, David (Tracy) de Leon, Daniel (Diurby) de Leon, Carin Spengler, Carlos de Leon, Susy de Leon; grandchildren, Jessica, Ricardo Andres, Stefanie, Ricardo, Maria, Andrea, Daniela, Marcela, Daniel, Isabella, Carlos Gabriel, Michelle, Nicolle, Lisa Mari, Paola, Guillermo, Ximena, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sons-in-law, Herbert Sundfeld and Carlos Spengler.

Funeral services for Marietta will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, at the Hayward Funeral Home. There will be a time of visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
