Thomas Leonard Barthel Jr.

Thomas L. “Tom” Barthel Jr., 92 of Hayward, WI, passed away peacefully at his home on January 17, 2023.

Tom was born on June 27, 1930, in Chicago Illinois to Thomas and Pauline (Setzer) Barthel.  He is survived by his wife Carol, sister Mary Barthel Bork  (Tom) 4 children,  Thomas Barthel III, (Canada) ; Lynda Friemueller  (Yucca Valley, Ca) ; Kurt Barthel (Debby) Hayward;  Mike Barthel (Danielle) Hayward ; 9 grandchildren,  Sarah Barthel,  Becca Turnbull, Hannah Furlow, Jessica Howe, Nicole, Garrett, Jesse, Crystal and Reanna Barthel as well as 13 great-grandchildren;  seven step children , Bill, Danny, Cathy, Pat, Ronnie, Keith Dougherty (Rebecca) and Lori Gerich both of Hayward ; four step grandchildren,  Anthony Dougherty (Priscilla) U.S Navy New Jersey;  Joann Dougherty; Cody Gerich (Casssandra) North Dakota and Ryan Gerich, Hayward; as well as five step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jerry and Chuck and his sister Celeste Barthel Vogel.

Tom grew up in Chicago where he worked at a variety of jobs before entering the Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in 1954, Tom moved to Country Club Hills, IL where he worked as a truck driver for Material Service Corp. Tom and his family moved to Hayward in 1969 where he worked as a truck driver for several years before starting his career with the United States Postal Service in Spooner Wi, also working part-time at the Hayward Armory. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and casino trips.

Tom and Carol were married in Las Vegas on his birthday June 27th 1989. After retiring from the Post Office in 1990, he assisted his wife, Carol, with her business (former owner of Riverside Lanes 1980 – 2022).

A memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Hayward Funeral Home, 15571 W County Highway B in Hayward.  Military honors will follow at 3:00 P.M.  Interment will be held privately.
